Oh those beautiful tiles!

I think 50% of the reason we bought this place was because of the floors. We’ve always loved original cement tiles like this, so you can imagine how giddy we were to find room after room of it in some of the most incredible patterns we’ve seen. Best of all, they’re in amazing condition.


Yes, there are some rooms with your standard (semi-boring) terra cotta hex tiles. The upper floors have a lot of terrazzo which we also like. But a ton of the character of this house comes through those original hand-made tiles. We’re thrilled so much of it survived.

To keep them undamaged during the renovation, the builder has mentioned taking them up, cleaning them, and then reinstalling them. No idea how that works, and it sounds like a recipe for broken tiles, so we’ll have to talk that one out with him a bit more, but apparently it’s common to do.
