What’s that in the floor?

When you first enter from the street, our palazzo has a long, high, arched-ceiling hallway that leads to the foot of the main staircase. We’re planning on making the space quite dramatic – with uplighting highlighting the arches and a couple of vintage chandeliers hanging down. But it’s the floor, which was likely done sometime in the 1400s or early 1500s, that should end up being the coolest part.

At first, you might not notice it. It can look like just river rocks randomly laid into the concrete. But on closer inspection… can you make it out?

The white river rock is set into the shape of a person. He’s got what appears to be a feather in his cap and he’s holding a poleaxe off to the left. In the upper left there’s the sun, with the moon in the upper right.

There’s a band of white rocks that goes across the top of the image, and it appears that there could be another design on the back half of the hallway, but we haven’t been able to make it out yet.

We’re researching the best method to clean and seal everything to bring out the stone contrast even more. We hope to showcase a part of this palazzo that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before.
